With antique trade bead necklaces.  These twin totems were carved for twins and then perhaps kept at a family altar. They look like they have been rubbed, and there are traces of indigo on their heads.

The sphinx-headed man (he reminds me of Shakespeare or Washington) on his solid round base stoically balances an uneven weight on his head.

Dogon Door

This fantastic door was carved out of a single plank of wood and is covered with rows of 52 ancestor figures with their arms raised.

Two male and two female figures face outward and surround a  quadroped animal.  Carved from one piece of wood and showing great age with traces of paint, formerly had a hinged lid and may have stood on a spike.  Yoruba.

A shoulder-crook staff superbly carved with paired ancestor figures and carried by elders in the Dogon Yo Domolo society which was concerned with burials. This authentic prestige staff shows wear from use.

Mahongwe reliquary

 

A reliquary is a guardian placed among the bones of a revered ancestor. Tuned to the spirit world, its face is concave and receptive like a satallite dish, and covered with alligned strips of copper. The eyes are wide open.
