A Collection of Ait Ouaouzguite
Rugs
The medium-pile rugs that are woven in the pre-Saharan foothills
of the Moroccan High Atlas range are often knotted upon a soft yellow
wool foundation. This distinctive grouping features some old
examples from the region around the town of Tazenakht. These
rugs are attributed to the weavers of the Ait Ouaouzguite Berbers
and their sub-clans and neighbors. Although they sometimes employ
formal elements of design, these rugs have an authentic tribal sensibility
and are very well-made.
